Maine Cabin

This tiny little cabin set on a 12 acre wooded site near the coast of Maine is a refuge in the true Scandinavian tradition.

We decided to build a cabin rather suddenly. Andrew and I were on our way back from Norway with our daughter Solveig wondering when we were going to visit again. We were expecting our second child and the logistics of making the trip as a family of four seemed a bit much. At least for a while. We had often thought about having a cabin in Norway but we wanted a place we could go often.

The dream of having a cabin, or hytte in Norwegian, is deeply engrained in the Norwegian psyche. It was something I thought of often as our escape, our special place with our kids and a house we designed for ourselves.

The building is approximately 20 ' x 30' in size with a sleeping loft over half of the footprint. The kitchen and bathroom share one plumbing wall and the entire cabin is heated by the wood burning stove. The main roof plane is oriented south for solar panels and the on site well and septic system make it entirely off-grid.
