For the last 100 years Dikemark, in Asker Norway, has been a place to be avoided. It has been a self-sufficient psychiatric facility fenced off from the surrounding community. It requires a lot of imagination to picture Dikemark as an open, vibrant, diverse urban community that is a destination for the region. The purpose of this project is to make Dikemark a destination. In the beginning it may be a place people go one the weekends to ski or swim or visit the galleries or a music festival. The larger Dikemark area has varied topography and landscape types along with an array of existing buildings that are to be protected. Therefore there cannot be one development strategy that applies to the whole area. The image of a shish kabob came to mind – a variety of different ingredients organized and cooked together on a skewer, the tastes blending and made more delicious by their combination and proximity. The spine or skewer in this case is The Park Line, a linear park for walking, biking, running and skiing that runs through all the neighborhoods of Dikemark.
