ornamental screens
A folly to the rigid concrete boxes of the BEACH HOUSE, the metals screens are ornamental, mutable, diaphanous and playful. They screen the nearby neighbors from view. They mark the passage of time throughout the day with their shadows. They mirror the garden space on the interior of the house with their pattern of foliage.

We worked closely with the graphic designers at TwoPoints.net and Constructing Communication in Barcelona to develop an original pattern based that was both abstract and figurative. The pattern then had to be scaled to work with the dimensions of the 1/2" aluminum. There could be no islands in the pattern that would fall out when cut and there could be no openings larger than a 2x4 so the screens could also protect the windows from airborne projectiles in a hurricane. Finally the screens are mounted to a frame that hinges open to wash the windows.
